My Fiction Writing Journey

During the first two years of writing fiction, and attempting to produce a full novel, the process was slow, for me. There were tears. There was a lot of sweat. And…maybe a little blood?

I declared the start of my fiction writing journey to be officially happening in the fall of 2017. There had been a gap between writing and producing my non-fiction work, I had continued to plunge myself into the local writing community, and just attended my favorite, local writing conference. With no particular goal, or project, in mind, I attended a plethora of presentations and discussions, all on topics that intrigued me. I met a local Detective, and was blown away by his presentation on principles of investigations. It stirred within me the passion for true crime books and shows that had been swelling within me for a long time.

I decided I wanted to know if I could write a novel.

I had no idea what that meant, really. But, I knew I wanted to try. It was a strong desired pulsing in my gut. I had to forge forth and let the journey unfold.

I did make a plan, of course. And that plan was derailed from time to time, of course. That is life. But if I’ve learned anything from the ventures and projects that I’ve thrown myself into, it’s how you respond to such derailments that really matters.

I remember the first year of researching and trying to write. At times, I could have sworn I was trying to extract blood from a rock. It took me a while to get it. To be able to let go, let my imagination run wild, and to write freely, words falling on the page. What a glorious moment that was when I realized I’d found my flow.

Now, looking back, and staring at my author page, I am grateful, delighted, hell, I’m ecstatic, that I have continued to set goals and to work hard, and to find my own writing process.

Today, four and a half years after declaring my fiction writing journey has started, I am thrilled to be able to share my author profile here. Eeeeek!!!

First line up: my core series. An 80s metal dark crime series, comprised of two full novels and a novella. The third in the series is planned for launch early 2022.

I have had two short horror stories published! Yes! Someone else loved my story enough to publish it in their works – TWO TIMES! I am also collaborating on a horror anthology that will be released in Oct (The Omens Call). I had no idea I would be working with others, and co-creating an anthology!

Share with me. What journey have you embarked on? Where are you at? What successes have you had? What are you struggling with?

And, please, believe me when I say: YES YOU CAN!

Do You Love The Doors?

Do you love The Doors as much as I do?

What do you think about The Gardian’s recent ranking of the top Doors tracks?

The Guardian ranking of greatest Doors songs.

I know I have my own passionate opinions. I do think they mostly got it right. What do you think? Comment away. And share your favorite Doors song. If I get ten comments, I’ll share mine.

Flash Sale!

It’s been a while since I have written a post. I’m sorry. I got lost in finishing book 3 (Yes! Book 3!) in the Det. Mahoney, 80s metal murder series. I was attempting to juggle quite a few things. I stepped back, focused on less, in the name of quality.

Things are settling now. I am starting to find a flow in the different areas of my little book business.

Thank you for your patience. I am thrilled you are still hanging around. As a thank you, I am having a flash sale. Today is the last day, so grab your copy!

There’s lots going on! I’ve been working on two different novellas. One is a spin off of one of the characters from the Det. Mahoney series. The other, more on the horror side of things, is about Owen, his terrarium, and the life he lives according to a painful cycle.

I’m also deep into a killer collaboration with an amazing horror author, Daniel Willcocks, and we will be releasing a delicious horror anthology in time for Halloween.

Finally, I have a gruesome story about gluttony coming out in July as part of a fantastic anthology, Forbidden Fruit, by the talented Seventh Terrace.

Stay tuned here for details on all of this, along with some new features coming up (80s metal, murder, and horror, oh – and a head bang or two).

xoxoxo Demon Julie

Another Book is HERE!!!

I’ve been silent. Well, I haven’t exactly been silent, but I haven’t blogged.

I love writing my blog. I am so happy to be back doing it again.

As the new year opened up, I buckled down and focused. My second novel was basically done. Written. Beta read. Edited. Cover designed. Only the last push through the production side of things remained. It was nitty and gritty work…but it’s done!

I am hard on myself. I am sure a lot of you can relate. Thus, as I took my final peruse through my creation before unleashing it onto the world, I was delighted at how delicious I found it. Yes. Dark. Delicious. Infused with my stamp.

I present to you, Acid Track. A 70s acid rock laced serial killer vs detective dark tale. The sequel to my debut novel Final Track. I am proud of it, and thrilled to be rolling it out.

The cherry on top of the acid rock laced thrilling ride is the PARTAY that I am throwing to celebrate! YOU are invited. It may be virtual, but it will be a sweaty, head-banging rock out night! I hope you can join me from wherever you may be in the world. CLICK On the invite to sign up and participate. From costume contests to song requests for the 80s metal legends Nöize Böyz, there are plenty of killer ways to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime-80s-metal-infused-70s-acid-rock-laced-book-launch-partay (or at least until the next book release)!

Acid Track goes live on March 12. Stay tuned for pre-order and party deets, or follow along on FB, Insta, or join Julie Hiner – Author | MailerLite.

Free Books for Dark Readers

All I can say is WOW! I’m popping in to share with you not one, but TWO, massive give-a-ways on some delicious, dark reads.

It’s been a rough year. It’s been a challenging time. It’s been a busy few weeks. Grab yourself some free reads, pour a strong cocktail, and curl up by the fire. Yes. Do it. Demon Julie says so.

Positively Power – ACDC

Right at a time when we all need a little positivity, the kings of rock deliver. ACDC has just released their newest album – Power Up. It packs punch. It pumps that positive, body twitching, head jerking ACDC electric juice through your entire body. Click on the quick vid below for a little sneak preview (I indulged in the hardcore fan package of the CD version).

Every tune shoots energetic vibes through the air for miles and miles. I don’t know how these guys are still doing it, but they are. Power Up is the seventeenth album of ACDC, and the tunes do not disappoint. Malcolm and Agnus, the brothers that initiated the spark that would become ACDC, co-wrote the songs. Malcolm sadly passed in 2017 of dementia. What a tribute to him.

I still get thrills shooting through my veins when I think back to the time I dragged my better half on a half day journey just to go and see these guys. It was pouring, I mean POURING, rain, but it didn’t slow them down. Angus trotted, danced, whipped his head around and convulsed in guitar god bliss across that slippery, rain drenched stage as it if were a slight sprinkle.

Even Rolling Stone acknowledges that they’ve never slowed down, and this new album is one of their best. Check out the full article.

So here’s to all those about to rock, all those who love dirty deeds done dirt cheap, and every raving fan who remains thunderstruck decades later!

Bon (Demon) Julie’s 80s Metal Murder Birthday

It all began with some sweet birthday sugar from my lovely friends. I didn’t expect gifts. Especially not 80s metal, chocolate, flowers, and wheels of cheese gifts!

I woke up early, got some writing in, then braved the snow storm to get my free pie in a cup from Starbucks. Peppermint mocha. Yes.

At several times during the day, I fondled the hard cover copies of the Horror anthology I was recently published in. They arrived just in time for birthday fondling. And yes, I love the word fondling.

Mid morning was spin time! Pre burn for my birthday dinner. I paired the sweat fest with a movie suggested by my horror loving friend who knows my fetish for metal. The Green Room did not disappoint. And I quote, it’s like “licking the floor in a public restroom.” Ha. While watching it, I actually felt like I was back at Vern’s on the night of my book launch.

Then it was sprint time! Writing a chunk of words with my awesome Nanowrimo Bootcamp. They rock. And I got in a great scene started in the hospital after my main character gets attacked by a glowing purple monster fish with fangs.

After a warm bubble bath I had an experience beyond all with a small slice of the triple creme brie that my dear friends gave me. Oh. My. God. Once you have triple creme, you never go back.

Of course, the experienced wheel of cheese eater as I am, a beer pairing is a must. My special birthday pumpkin beer brewed by amazing hubby went perfectly with the triple creme. To top it off, I took in one of my fav rock movies, wrapped in a blanket, by the fireplace. I mean, cheese, beer, Marky Mark as a rock star…say no more.

Now, you’d think this enough, right? Nope. The evening was topped off with a wonderful winter walk, with hubby, up to a new restaurant near us. More cheese. Wine. Pizza. Limoncello. Walk home. What a day. And, no, there are no pictures of dinner. I didn’t look at my phone. I took in the evening.

What is your favourite birthday memory?

10 Days of Halloween – Wrap Up

It’s sad to say goodbye to my beloved Halloween for another year. But, as I look back on the last week, I realize I’ve had enough fun…for now.

Our pumpkin carving was a success. The new carving toolset is awesome! I can’t wait to stretch my limits next year.

Bake time was a blast, and it was delicious. Who doesn’t love feasting on the remnants in the mixing bowl?

I spent the whole day listening to Halloween songs, including my all time favorite.

And of course, I had some devlish fun on my makeup.

To top off this amazing week with an 80s metal cherry, Halloween Howler with Broken Toyz was a blast.

If you love Halloween as much as I do, stay here, and follow along on Facebook or Instagram, for plenty more spine prickling things….

10 Days of Halloween – Halloween Howler

Tonight is the Halloween Howler! What is the Halloween Howler, you ask? It’s a double header live 80s metal show! Adhering to the restrictions in place, a hotel in the downtown core of my city has found a way to support live music. Thus, my tiny entourage and I will be making our way down to the belly of the city, decked up in 80s metal gear, and watch two live bands prove that 80s metal is still alive!

Last week, when a multiple day snow storm hit, and winter descended upon us much too early, I thought, oh my, we will be huddling in our winter coats watching the show. You see, in order to meet the requirements, the show is at a hotel, the bands will be on the pool deck, and the fans will be watching from room balconies.

But then…the weather turned. The sun came out, the snow melted, and the day of the show is looking very promising indeed.

I am particularly excited about seeing Delicious Dan (yes, that’s my name for him). He was my favourite when I saw Broken Toyz at a small dive hot-boxed in sweat.

Here’s to Halloween! Here’s to 80s Metal! And here’s to making the best of life.

What activity are you looking forward to this Halloween? I would love to hear! Share in the comments.

10 Days of Halloween – Story Time

Only two more days until the spooky celebration of Halloween!

Are you ready, my little demons?

Today, I share with you a story that I wrote last Halloween. It’s creepy.

What are your favourite spooky stories? I’m always looking for more. Please, share with me in the comments.
