10 Days of Halloween

Things might be a little different this year. But it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the spooky day of Halloween. Why should the kids have all the fun? Us adults (or demons) like a good little trick or treat too.

What are your plans?

Parties and trick or treating aside, there are plenty of other deliciously dark things we can do!

Today, we talk about makeup! Yes. Creepy makeup is easy and fun to do. And the reactions are to die for. Doing creepy makeup is simple and doesn’t cost much. After all, a demon has to watch her budget.

Step one is to pick a look. With the internet, this is easy. Pinterest is a good source for ideas, or you simply use Google. Go on, search away, come up with at least three ideas.

Here’s some looks I’ve done in the past….

Once you pick out your look, you need a simple set of tools. This is my basic (cheap) toolkit. If you have a Halloween themed store near you, check it out. I found some great stuff at Halloween Alley. Shopper’s Drug Mart often carries special Halloween items. Any store with a cosmetic area will have some good, basic, inexpensive stuff (brushes, sponges, palettes).

(1) Base creams – white, black, red. I always keep white, black and red cream base. This can go all over your face, or used to accent.

(2) Palette – I’ve been reusing an old palette full of shadows and creams. I mix and match—an eyeshadow can be used for creating shadows on your face. A lip gloss can be used to emulate blood or make thick, glossy eyebrows. Have some fun, play around a little.

(3) Brush Set & Sponge – a simple sponge is cheap. I buy them by the bagful at Super Store. Don’t throw away those old brush sets—repurpose them for creepy makeup time.

(4) Mascara & Liner – I love to mascara my eyelashes at the end. Liner is perfect to draw lines or darken around the eyes. I love Urban Decay (Sephora) as one stick lasts a long time, and this brand offers lots of glimmer options.

The creepy-photo-idea you chose to follow is a guide only. Your face is shaped differently than the person in the photo, and your look will be your own unique creation. Be free and expressive. Go with the flow.

STEP 1 – BASE: The first step is to do your base. Most of mine have been white. A simple sponge and base color do the trick. Make it as smooth as possible, but don’t fuss. Then, take a larger brush, swipe it through a flesh coloured blush, and pat/dab/brush over the white to bring out a little flesh colour.

STEP 2 – EYES: Next, I usually move on to the eyes. I make small additions to mock the shape I want and effect I want. I just play around while taking regular looks at the photo.

STEP 3 – FACE: When the eyes look almost done, try adding to the other parts of the face. Look at the photo, start with the areas that have the most makeup featured. Add a stroke, look back at the picture, add a stroke, look back at the picture…you get the point. Play with this! If you want to try something different than in the photo do it!

STEP 4 – FINAL TOUCHES: I usually put final touches on the eyes, revisit any areas I want to bring out more, then end with the lips.

Go out and look for ideas! Then post your photo ideas below! Come back on Halloween and share your final look.

And STAY TUNED here for more tips on specific creepy makeup looks. If there’s something you want to be featured, mention it in the comments.

Stay creepy, my little demons.

Story Time – Series Three Wrap Up

Hello my little demons!

I can’t believe that three series of story time have been recorded and shared.

This last one was just as delightful as the first two. I fall in love with every dark story that I choose to read to you, thus, it always seems like I won’t find more stories that I love just as much, but I do.

This last series featured some dark delights. If you missed any of them, simply scroll down a little. Be warned, these stories will chill your bones and keep you up at night. So, before you indulge, poor a stiff drink and curl up in a blanket. Then let Demon Julie come into your bedroom and tell you a terrifying tale, or two.

Stay tuned for a more story time coming soon!

Since it is Halloween month, I am on the hunt for Halloween themed stories, or stories of ghosts, gouls and the like. If you have a story that you would like read, please comment below or contact me! All that is required is that I get permission from the author to read his/her work.

Until next time…

Ode to the Lizard King

There’s something about a good front man that makes my insides tingle. I want a reptile like, tight, scantily clad body slithering up to a microphone, piercing my soul with his haunting eyes, and cloaking me with his deep, dark words. I want to feel like I’m the only one in the audience. Like he’s only singing to me.

The Lizard King has always been one of my favorite front men, despite the fact that I’ve only seen him on screen. His vocals are hypnotizing enough to pull me into the TV, landing me in a prime position, squished against the front of the stage.

He absolutely epitomized the definition of good front man. A poet at heart, he went through the ultimate transformation when he stepped on stage. Like a second skin, he shed his shyness, his trepidation, his old self, to become what the masses needed. Men and women looked to him to lead them to the other side in their acid induced states as he crooned to them of dead toads on the road and the end.

His words were haunting. His presence hypnotizing. His essence sereal. If I could, I would step back on time into one of those jam packed venues and infuse myself into the giant being of a crowd swaying back and forth in time to the delivery of the Liazrd King on stage in all his glory.

He had it all. A tight body. Long curls. Luscious lips. A dark message. A mysterious vibe. He entranced entire audiences, taking them away to another world with his presence alone.

If I am to mention how much I love a good front man, I must mention the Lizard King, eventhough I’ve only met him in my rock ‘n roll dreams.

Hanging by a Finger from a Balcony, Infused with Rye, and Steven Tyler….

This is a post about one of the most electric live music experiences of my life.

I literally was hanging onto the side of balcony by a combination of the tips of my booted toes and a finger (well maybe two or three fingers), watching one of the most amazing rock gods of all time, in a beer and sweat soaked tent. Somehow I manage to head bang to my fullest.

Let’s back up here. It was Stampede. For those of you who don’t what the heck Stampede is, it’s the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.’ Ten days packed full of parties and fun, it’s a concoction of a massive rodeo, an outdoor amusement park, casinos, livestock shows, art galleries, beer gardens, and live concerts. To top it off, the people of Calgary, the fine city that hosts this ridiculous brouhaha, attend a plethora of pancake breakfasts suited up on western gear. Yeeee-haw!!!

I grew up in Calgary, thus, Stampede seethes through my blood. The lover of music that I am, one of the highlights is the line up of live shows that migrate our way during this festive time. When Steven Tyler announced he would be playing at the Cowboys Tent – an outdoor, massive tent erected for the ten days of partying – I snatched my tickets up immediately. Loud. Sweaty. Standing room only. My kind of show.

GnR Live – Rough and Raw

Every live music experience is special in it’s own way. I love live music. I love the entire experience. From beer soaked joints packed tight to massive stadiums filled with screaming crowds, every experience is unique. And the band does not have to be perfect. in fact, it’s better if they’re not.

20200506_141248.jpg

I did see GnR when they re-united after many, many years. They all should have been dead a couple of decades earlier. I knew I wasn’t paying to see the GnR of 1987. I knew I was going to see the recently re-united and older GnR. It did turn out to be one of my favourite concerts. Why? Many reasons.

I got to wear what I wanted…

I mean, it’s not like I don’t wear what I want, well, most of the time, but, all of a sudden my pleather and tassels were acceptable. I fit right in. I was tickled pink that I could dawn my stretchy pleather pants and strut around in my buckled boots. Yeah bitch!

20170830_200118.jpg

It was an outdoor setting on a beautiful day, which we don’t get too much of here in freakin’ Canada. Basking in the sun, beer in hand, band on stage – you can’t ask for more. The drive up had been stressful on a packed highway with a bunch of other jackasses gunning it to the concert. The evening unfolded, starting with tacos and beers, and sliding into an early arrival to the outdoor venue. We had plenty of time to enjoy the amazing opening band and to chat it up with the friends who had joined us. I was relaxed.

Of course, GnR was – well – GnR. My long time beloved front man had been dwindling for a while. But I knew this. I was prepared. He held his own – well enough – for me to be delighted by the somewhat reminiscent screeches of the wild orange maned Axel of my youth. Even if it only came in small glimpses between rest breaks, during which I’m sure he was guzzling water and gulping down oxygen from a tank behind the stage. Still. I got to see Axel one last time.

Killers AND Demons? Why is Your Creation so Ghastly?

Killers AND demons. Why, Julie, why? Why did you create such a ghastly sounding website?

I’ll tell you why.

96763842_256418275410180_7177428360694333440_n

The killers part comes from my obsession with serial killers. I’m absolutely fascinated with such dark, twisted minds, and have been for a long time. I’ve been watching Criminal Minds for years, and I squeal with delight when an endless stream of re-runs appears on TV allowing me a full day of binging on murder while the rain pelts against the window. When I’m cooking dinner or my latest French pastry creation, I love to put Forensic Files on in the background and pick up tidbits of gruesome acts and how DNA, fibres, or stupidly left paper trails lead the authorities to the killer.

Dusting For Fingerprints On WhiteI love to problem solve. I love investigations, and poking holes in the fictitious, or real ones, that I watch with eagerness. As for the killers, well, it scares me to death what real people are capable of. This particular type of killer – the serial killer – the kind of person who cannot be completely and accurately psychologically diagnosed, and who becomes so obsessed with a dark fantasy that he or she must play it out over and over – like some sort of horror flick – until it is perfect, fascinates the part of my brain that can’t look away. I can’t help wanting to figure out why someone can murder dozens of people and do unspeakable things to the bodies. I can’t help wanting to understand why it happens and why it’s so difficult to stop, to prevent, to nip in the bud. It’s terrifying. Just like you, I have my favourite genres of movies and books – and scary shit just happens to be right on top.

A Dose of Happy

Hello readers, little demons, and friends. How are you doing? No, really. How ARE you doing? I would love to know. Your comments are welcome.

This is a simple – hi, how are you? – post.

We are all bombarded by scary, negative information right now.
We are all unsure of what will happen next.
The world around us is trying to figure out what to do.

I know you want to go back to ‘normal’. To go out for a glass of wine with a friend in the afternoon. To take part in summer activities. To leisurely browse your favourite bookstore. We all have things we miss. Things we are craving! I would LOVE to go out for a dose of live music, dancing and socializing with friends. Oh yes, I have moments where I just want to claw my way out of these walls around me.

But, I need to have a little patience. We all need to have a little patience. With each other, and with ourselves.

20200406_160108

When our uneasiness becomes intolerable, when our anxiety swells, we must regroup. I know it’s hard. But, if the let our bad feelings and thoughts get away from us, we infect ourselves and our family members. The energy can even seep through the world wide web into our online virtual meetings and classes

I say we CHOOSE to be positive. Even when it gets tough. We can create our own sunshine filled patio with a dose of happy hour.

80s Metal is Alive with NöIZE BöYZ

80s Metal is still alive. And, no, not just in my house. Although, the Bon Julie household does see a high daily dose of everything 80s and everything metal, despite the eye rolls and head shakes, it lives beyond the walls of one house.

Thus, when on the spur of the moment, 90s Britney and 80s Bon Julie, in the midst of sprawling evening, ventured to a local establishment for a few shots and a dose of live 80s music…the seedlings for local band NöIZE BöYZ to come back to life were planted.

Hold up. 90s Britney? Yes. The Brittney-Bon Julie duo is what you get when a bunch of quirky, dark writers decide to go to Olive Garden for cheap pasta and boiled meatballs. The night had been themed as dress like you did in the 90s. One demon sent another demon a picture of 90s Britney. The receiving demon showed up for dinner ready to declare that oops, she’d done it again. The evening was off to a grand start. The two little demons slithered away for a night of who knew what. Declaring that the evening needed some sort of spice, the little demon not in pigtails and a skirt pulled on cheap pleather and a Bon Jovi t-shirt. Thus, Bon Julie morphed into being and the dancing begun.

As declared by this not so subtle duo, the band was amazing, the dancing was spastic, and the night an overall success.

With an upcoming 80s metal party to celebrate the completion of a concept album wrapped in a serial killer novel, Bon Julie couldn’t fathom the party without the new found 80s rock gods. To her delight, they were interested. To her double delight, they had an alter ego featuring 80s metal.

20200117_080515.jpg

Although they have been hopping around town wearing their primary identification, they had so much fun re-igniting their 80s metal alter ego, and have unleashed an uncontrollable appetite by their fans. Thus, without further ado, the NöIZE BöYZ will be back THIS SATURDAY for a live stream 80s metal show that will rumble your insides and see you banging your head in your living room uncontrollably.

Join Bon Julie and throw in a couple of high kicks…just be careful not to knock over any lamps.
