When I decided to write my first novel, I didn’t know how to do it. I didn’t know if I could do it. It was a massive, incomprehensible project looming over me. I wanted to know, needed to know, if I could do it.
Before anything else, I find the most useful thing to do is to admit that I don’t know everything. I completely, 100 % admitted to myself and anyone who asked that I didn’t know how to write the novel that I so desperately wanted to write. I had no idea where to start. The first ‘chunk’ or set of scenes was the hardest.
This was fiction. This was ‘make belief’ laced with a high level of realism since I wanted my potential readers (if there were any out there) to get pulled into the fictional homicide investigation I was creating and become invested in the outcome.
Welcome, little demons, to episode two of the Scariest Serial Killers.
This feature will take you on a deep dive into some of the evilest minds lurching in the shadows. Serial killers are indeed a unique brand of killer. The extensive research I have done to fuel my old school detective versus serial killer series resulted in a clear identification of a set of traits, or components, that make up the breed of serial killer that I strive to capture.
This month, I’ve chosen a less talked about, yet horrifically sadistic killer — Robert Pickton, the pig farmer that lived in British Columbia. Through the lens of what composes a true serial killer, we will focus on his extensive repertoire, his ability to slip through the cracks, and his sick, twisted doings in his most sadistic fantasy.
Pickton became the suspect in the largest serial killer investigation in Canada. The total accounts of murder he was charged with kept creeping up, reaching twenty-seven, with another twelve later added. He later admitted to forty-nine accounts to an under-cover police officer. He complained about wanting to make it an even fifty, but he got sloppy and got caught.
Today I am here to share with you a fantastic Dark Fantasy series that you MUST add to your book shelf.
I am NOT usually a series reader, nor a reader of dark fantasy. Yet, this series absolutely grabbed me and pulled me into it’s dark, tantalizing vortex. I blasted through these books with ease as I was drawn to the characters, their stories, and their struggles.
Why couldn’t I put this series down?
WORLD BUILDING – The author, Konn, has an incredible talent for building imaginative worlds and describing them vividly on the page. I felt like I was there, in these amazing places, navigating along with the characters.
CHARACTERS – I was drawn to the characters, their struggles, their stories, and their emotions. I cared deeply about the main character, Krista, and wanted so much for the lovely reptilian mutation to find her way.
ART – This series is more than a set of books. Each book is a masterpiece of fiction, poetry, and hand drawn art work woven together beautifully. Konn shares his unique talents that he has poured his passion into.
It’s time to wrap up the second series in story time.
My demon heart is warm with delight after delivering two of story time. Instead of being tucked in by mom or dad, you get a devilishly terrifying bed time story with Demon Julie.
I loved the first series so much, I doubted there could be an equal. Yet, as I plunged into series two, the stories I had hand selected slipped their slippery claws deep into my flesh and grabbed my heart. The thrill of reading them seethed through my veins as strong as the first batch. Oh yes.
Thank you for tuning in, and thank you to the amazing authors that gave me permission to read their terrifying works of art.
If you missed out on the horrific tales that made up series two, you can still get them here.
You might want to mix a stiff cocktail before proceeding. And turn out ALL the lights.
Did you like this? Stay tuned for series 3….
Did you miss out on series on? Demon Julie would’t keep it from you…
When I started writing fiction, I wanted the words on the page to be good. I wanted readers to connect with the characters and get pulled into the story. It took time and effort for me to learn how to translate the snippets in my brain to well written sentences on the page. One thing I have going for me on my new found path as an author is that I love to learn. Along the way, on my journey one word at a time, I’ve built a tool box. One of my most favorite tools is the thesaurus collection written by the dynamite duo Angela and Becca. This is my personal collection
I’m here to share with you today some exciting news! The release of the newest thesaurus is just around the corner. More information here.
I blasted through my advanced reader copy in no time and am thrilled to have discovered yet another way of looking at and developing both my characters and my storylines. Yes, just when you think there’s nothing left to learn, these two put a new spin on things. I understand if you are wary of writing tools. Trust me, I stick to what I feel in my gut and I dig into whatever natural talent I have. But, sometimes it helps to learn a new technique, try a new way of thinking about things, and get the brain tingling with ideas.
The reason I love the thesaurus collection so much is that they are easy to digest, well organized and can be used as references to go back to when you are stuck or need to elevate something.
To put the cherry on top, I’ve found these books helpful for any type of story or character, no matter how dark and twisted. After all, I do write about killers and demons.
Give any them of a whirl. I doubt you will be disappointed.
It’s time to wrap up the first series in story time. What fun it has been to take my listeners back to the time when mom or dad would read you a story and tuck you in at night. It has been a pure delight to introduce to you the adult version of story time. The stories told here are ones of horror, and the time of day that you listen to them is up to you. Do you need the light on? Or can you immerse yourself in a terrifying story in the darkness of night?
I did very much enjoy doing this series. Some terrific horror writers were kind enough to give me permission to read from their devilish delights. Thank you to each an every one of these authors. Please, do check out what they are up to, all links are provided below. Take a listen to the readings you missed, and if you like the stories, get your full copy of their terrifying work.
It has been so much fun reading these beautifully written works.
If you missed out, or want to listen again, please do. Grab a morning coffee, or a late night cocktail, curl up on your couch with a blanket, and allow me to send a prickle running down your spine, or perhaps whisper a chill through your bones.
Goodbye, beloved series. My little demon heart shall forever hold you within.
